Angels

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

..September 2002 New York..

This shot was taken during the first portrait project Tracy and I shot. At the time, Tracy was in a theater production of Angels in America. About 2 years before Angels in America was made by HBO for tv.

The shot was inspired by the character she was playing, Harper. It was good to have my own vision of the play and character before it was produced for a tv audience.

It was the first time we seriously worked on shooting portraits. We hadn’t worked together for a year prior. After this portrait we worked almost non-stop for 5 years. Photographing constantly, finding locations around New York to remote areas in New Mexico.

Rose Wood

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

..December 2009 New York..

Since returning from Japan, I’ve been photographing Rose Wood. It’s an interesting break from photographing Hibakusha in Japan. A different experience. But it’s been moving. The portraits are becoming stronger emotionally. More comfort and vulnerability in the eyes.

I attempted to photograph Rose for the original Striptease Burlesque exhibition in Tokyo 3 years ago and than the exhibition that followed in Helsinki, Finland last winter. Scheduling never materialized.

It would have been nice to have her a part of the exhibition. But as I’ve progressed photographing her, I realize she is a part of her own project. Explaining Rose Wood in one photograph for the Striptease Burlesque project wouldn’t have told her whole story. There’s much more to Rose.

I’m not sure if this will be my next exhibited project. Right now, I’m concentrating on the photographs. We’ll see where the process leads.

Cherry Typhoon

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

..May 2007  Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan..

Cherry Typhoon….Close to the end of my trip.   I woke up early to photograph Cherry Typhoon in Asakusa.

Jet lagged and eager.   My mind is working again since I have a photo to take.   The day off drove me crazy.   I don’t do well with free time and nothing to do.  The anxiety sets in that I’m wasting my time.

I feel good this morning.   Would be a good time for a walk.   I feel like a caged tiger.   I’m ready now.

Controlled Bleeding Album Cover

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

..September 2002 New York..

The first album cover I shot for a band called Controlled Bleeding. It’s still my favorite album cover I’ve done. Working with Paul Lemos of Controlled Bleeding has gone well over the years. I’ve shot 5 album covers for them.

I first started working with him when I was hired by Outburn Magazine to do a portrait. It was my first commissioned shot for Outburn back in 1999. I shot a lot of assignments for Outburn until 2006.

Paul has always been open to ideas and using the images as is on the album covers. Not much text or manipulation of the photos. It’s always been photo, Controlled Bleeding, and album title. We’ve always come up with a clear vision of how the artwork matches his music. I’ve never been disappointed with the product.

I shot this photo years before. Right after graduating college. Shot somewhere along the Potomac River. When Paul saw the photo it was the one he wanted.
