Because there will be a battle for the town.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em> &#8211;<\/em>Nora Lang<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nOn February 13th, 1945 the baroque city of\n Dresden, Germany was firebombed into cinder by the British Royal Air \nForce and the United States Army Air Force. The attack was divided into \nthree bombing raids dropping over 4,500 tons of high explosives, \nincluding incendiary bombs, onto the city known as \u201cFlorence on the \nElbe.\u201d \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nora Lang\nstill lives close to where her original home was destroyed.&nbsp; From her living room window you can see the\nlocation of her old house.&nbsp;&nbsp; She is\nphotographed next to a ruined church, Trinitatiskirche, one street from her\nhome.\n\nNora was 13 1\/2 when Dresden was destroyed.&nbsp; Her family lived in Dresden-Johannstadt.&nbsp; They survived the first attack by taking\nshelter in their cellar.&nbsp; \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter\n the first attack they had to leave their burning home and experience \nhell as they were chased by the firestorm through burning streets.&nbsp; They\n tried to find shelter several times during the deadly second and third \nattack waves which lasted the entire night and didn&#8217;t succumb until the \nnext morning. &nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThis portrait is a part of my From Above \nproject which featured portraits of atomic bomb and firebombing \nsurvivors from WWII.
