{"id":9280,"date":"2024-12-19T14:16:44","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T18:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulepictures.com\/blog\/?p=9280"},"modified":"2024-12-19T14:16:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T18:16:44","slug":"shigeko-sasamori-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paulepictures.com\/blog\/2024\/12\/19\/shigeko-sasamori-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Shigeko Sasamori"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I received the sad news that Shigeko Sasamori passed away in her sleep this week at the age of 92.\u00a0 Shigeko was 13 years old when the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima and suffered deadly injuries.\u00a0 She was so badly burned that she was unrecognizable.\u00a0 Her father found her days after because she kept repeating her name.\u00a0 In 1955, Shigeko was chosen to be part of a small group of young girls called the\u00a0<em>Hiroshima Maidens<\/em>.\u00a0 They were brought to New York to have reconstructive plastic surgeries.\u00a0 Shigeko immigrated and lived the majority of her life in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I photographed Shigeko while she visited New York through\u00a0<em>Hibakusha Stories<\/em>\u00a0to speak with students at high schools and universities.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Hibakusha Stories<\/em>\u00a0gave several hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) the opportunity to communicate with thousands of students for almost a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first photograph is of Shigeko dancing with students at Hunter College, and the other is with high school students at Brooklyn Friends during 2013.&nbsp;
