Interview on John Batchelor Show WABC Radio- July 2017

This is the link Friday night’s interview about From Above on The John Batchelor Show on WABC Radio. We cover some of my journey to Hiroshima and Nagasaki photographing atomic bomb survivors (hibakusha). The exhibition will once return to the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Hall in December 2017 and will also be shown for a limited time at the Tenri Cultural Institute in NY from August 2nd-15th.

From Above exhibition at the TENRI Cultural Institute, New York

From Above photography exhibition at the TENRI Cultural Institute features portraits of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In 2012, From Above was released as a limited edition multi-lingual photo book in English, Japanese and German. The book sold out internationally and gained media attention in North America, Japan, Europe and Australia. The project has also featured in numerous television, newspaper and radio reports from across the globe.
In addition to this,

From Above has been displayed on multiple occasions in international museums and exhibition spaces, including the United Nations in New York and the Nagasaki Prefecture Museum of Art.

The goal of From Above is to put a human face to the words in the history books.

The exhibition will be open August 2nd-15th. The gallery hours are:
Monday-Friday 12pm-6pm
Saturday 10-3pm
Closed on Sunday

On August 8, at 7pm – 10:30pm, there is a reception, peace concert, and live streaming of the commemoration ceremonies from Nagasaki.

Dr. Shuntaro Hida

“As a doctor who survived the atomic bomb, I have many missions to go on.
Till today, I lived for that mission.
If I don’t continue talking about the fierce
and unknown diseases caused by radiation; we will not find a cure.”

Earlier this week I received the sad news that Dr. Shuntaro Hida died at the age of 100.

Dr. Hida experienced the atomic bomb when he was 28 years old, at a patient’s home 6km from the hypocenter. He treated the wounded almost immediately after the atomic bomb detonated. He continued to treat hibakusha and other radiation affected people until the end of his life.

I photographed Dr. Hida in 2010 at his home in Saitama, Japan. The photograph almost didn’t happen because he had been ill with pneumonia. Luckily he was released from the hospital on the last day of my trip. He was the only doctor I photographed for the project.

Woman Sitting in Front of the White House

..January 2016 The Woman outside the White House..

Earlier today Concepcion Picciotto, the woman who maintained a three decade long vigil in front of the White House protesting the use of nuclear weapons, passed away.

I’ve seen her sitting in snow up to her waist and sweating in the oppressive August humidity. She out lasted 4 Presidents who slept about 100 yards away in the Lincoln Bedroom inside a mansion called the White House. I’ve been carrying a business card she handed me the first time I met her. It has shoved into the corner of my camera bag for 19 years.

Just weeks before atomic bomb survivor Mrs. Hisayo Yamashita passed away in 2010, she had asked me to bring a large package of socks, gloves and blankets from Japan to Mrs. Picciotto in Washington, DC.
